How To Groom A Horse

1. The first thing you want to do when grooming a horse is making sure they are properly secured by tying them to some bailing twine on a quick release knot. We do this to make sure the horse stays still but if a quick getaway is needed they can break free. 

2. Next, you pick out your horses hooves with a hoof pick to get all the excess mud and stones out, making sure to avoid the triangular area as this spot is sensitive.

3. You then use a curry comb to loosen all the hair and dirt. We do this in a circular motion, being careful around their legs and face.

4. Next you use a dandy brush to take off all the hair and dirt that was brought to the surface by the curry comb. Don't use this on the horses face, mane or tail though.

5. You can then use a soft brush to go over all the same areas to leave a shiny and soft coat. However, if your horse spends a lot of time out in the field it is advised to not use this brush as it can take off some of the natural oils they need to keep warm at night.

6. You can then concentrate on cleaning the horses face and sometimes lower legs with a face brush, you especially want to focus on the parts of the horses face where the bridle will go so it doesn't rub.

7. Finally, brush out the mane, tail and forelock. To make it a bit easier you can apply some detangler but do not use this on the horses coat. When brushing their tail, it is a smart idea to not stand directly behind them as this is one of two of the horses blind spots so you might take them by surprise, the other being straight in front of them.

These are the basic steps to grooming a horse that you should follow, however there are additional things to clean your horse with such as a magic brush and sponge but these are not essential.
